About Rick

Rick Miller, LICSW, has dedicated his 40-year career to motivating people to change and inspiring them to find optimism inside themselves. Through his work as a psychotherapist, public speaker, podcaster, workshop presenter, interviewer, and author, he helps individuals, couples, groups, and others connect—and thrive—together. A gay man who has himself navigated social stigma, Rick’s journey of self-acceptance has influenced his work with others. He shows people how to embrace complexities as well as vulnerabilities—and how to grow from these experiences.

Rick is a sought-after speaker for events, workshops, and conferences. He is the founder and executive director of a nonprofit organization, Gay Sons & Mothers, and the executive producer of the upcoming documentary, Mom, I Have Something to Tell You.

Rick is an acclaimed TEDx speaker, and his workbook for male couples, Opening Up, is forthcoming in 2025.

Rick’s work as a psychotherapist informs all the work that he does

LGBTQ+

Rick has always been on the forefront to meet the needs of  the LGBTQ+ community.  He has provided numerous services to the AIDS field since the 1980’s, created mindfulness and hypnotic scripts for gay men, providing training to medical and mental health professionals regarding gay development, as well as gay couples and sexuality, and researched about how a mothers presence impacts her gay sons well-being (Gay Sons and Mothers).

Couples

His specialty in working with gay couples has enabled Rick  to teach for well known couple experts such as Terry Real, Esther Perel, Stan Takin as well as speak at the Harvard Couples Conference and The Couples Conference. He has taught at various medical and mental health Conferences including The Psychotherapy Networker, Couples Conferences, Evolution of Psychotherapy, Brief Therapy Conference.
