LGBTQ+

The goal is to access your inner strength

Rick’s work with the LGBTQ+ community spans the whole of his 40-year career. Since coming out himself, he’s shown up to speak and teach about important issues, particularly when they have received little attention.

40+ years supporting the LGBTQ+ Community

During the AIDS epidemic, as a very young clinician, Rick volunteered to lead support groups and ran a program at the AIDS Action Committee of Massachusetts. He provided training for medical personal and mental health workers when very little was known about the disease, and he ran groups for medical personal exhausted and feeling trauma around losing so many patients.

He has written books and conducted mindfulness trainings worldwide addressing marginalization, cross-cultural issues, shame, and religion, approaching mindfulness from a gay perspective—something that had never been documented before. He has trained clinicians most particularly about doing hypnosis and mindfulness with gay men.

Author of the first-ever workbook for male couples

Rick has found this work in ever-increasing demand. There’s a specific challenge for men around being vulnerably expressive with one another. Being independent and strong comes so much more easily to us than acknowledging what might be viewed as “softer” emotions; our culture supports strength in men and belittles deep internal vulnerability or insecurity. Rick outlines ways of transcending some of those difficulties and accessing strong communication and well-being as a couple.

The Mother Figure in His Work

He recognized that there was no psychiatric literature addressing the primordial relationship between gay men and their mothers, has written extensively about the topic, presented it at a TEDx event, and founded a nonprofit that educates communities about the importance of the bond.

Mom, I Have Something to Tell You

Mom, I Have Something to Tell You is a documentary resulting from years of interviews in which women and their gay sons share, discuss, and sometimes celebrate their relationships. It offers stories of resilience and demonstrates the amazing strength that gay men are able to draw from their mothers’ acceptance, support, and love. The film has won a number of awards and proved itself to be transformative in audiences’ understanding of LGBTQ+ family and friends.

Gay Sons & Mothers

One of the most significant themes in Miller’s work is the exploration of the bond between gay sons and their mothers, especially in the context of families with conservative or religious backgrounds. Over the course of his life, he’s discovered that mothers often transcend cultural and religious barriers to love and accept their sons for who there are.

He believes in the power of love and acceptance to heal and transform family dynamics
