Psychotherapist
The goal is simple: to feel better.
Rick’s approach stems from over 40 years’ experience with a custom blend of treatment modalities he tailors to the unique needs of each client(s), using a dynamic treatment plan to enhance comfort and alleviate symptoms of distress. Rick brings his expertise and outstanding empathy/listening skills to individual, couples, and group therapy situations:
Individual work
Rick works with his individual clients to help them identify, understand, and change difficult thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. For many people, this work allows them to gain skills to live a healthier, happier, more balanced life. An area of specialization within his individual work is working with LGBTQ+ individuals.

Couples work
Rick’s interactive therapeutic style has enabled him to be a good mediator and active participant as couples explore their relationship together. He works with couples to see and respect each other’s viewpoint, communicate more, and establish a harmonious connection.

Family work
Rick’s interactive clinical style works particularly well when working with more than one person to mediate disagreements, help prevent or intervene in crises, and enhance communication. The goal of family work is to repair and move beyond wounds, appreciate the bonds that exist in families, prioritize members’ varying needs and develop a solid strategy for moving forward. He has worked with many different family configurations, including LGBTQ+ families.

Featured In
Rick has been pursued by many presenters, show hosts, and producers based on his expertise in couples work and the LBBTQ+ community. Publications have sought his “take” on news-related events as he is an intelligent and reliable source of information. His fresh, practical ideas appeal to large and disparate audiences.

Group work
Rick’s immersion began with support groups during the AIDS era, and he continues to work with a wide range of groups, seeing them as essential tools for interpersonal growth. He has in particular focused on groups for gay men with a history of disenfranchisement, who particularly need the sense of community, and on time-limited sessions in businesses to address trauma and focus on achieving a better working environment.

Hypnosis
A significant part of Rick’s clinical work, and an area where he is known internationally as an expert, is in hypnosis, bringing clients into a state of deep relaxation and focused concentration. Rick has taught hypnosis as a faculty member and at conferences and has written extensively on the subject and how it complements other therapeutic practices.

Author of the first-ever workbook for male couples

Rick has found this work in ever-increasing demand. There’s a specific challenge for men around being vulnerably expressive with one another. Being independent and strong comes so much more easily to us than acknowledging what might be viewed as “softer” emotions; our culture supports strength in men and belittles deep internal vulnerability or insecurity. Rick outlines ways of transcending some of those difficulties and accessing strong communication and well-being as a couple.
