Couples
The goal is to be more in synch with each other
Rick works with many different kinds of couples, but has special expertise in working with male couples, a skill not often encountered in clinical milieus. His interactive style of doing therapy when more than one person is in the room has enabled him to be a good mediator and active participant as couples explore their relationship with each other.
Being himself gay, he has learned to deal with the special relationship issues that come up in this population; and it can be a comfort to male couples to have a therapist with a background in what they’re experiencing.
Rick has created myriad scripts for couples to use as talking points. He leads supervision groups for clinicians dealing with couples, and one of his areas of expertise is in teaching about couples work.
He’s on the faculty at Harvard Medical School, the Couples’ Conference, and the Milton Erickson Couples Conference, as well as working with Terry Real, Esther Perel, and Stan Tatkin.

Interviewed By
Rick has been pursued by many presenters, show hosts, and producers based on his expertise in couples work and the LGBTQ+ community. Publications have sought his “take” on news-related events as he is an intelligent and reliable source of information. His fresh, practical ideas appeal to large and disparate audiences.

Author of the first-ever workbook for male couples

Rick has found this work in ever-increasing demand. There’s a specific challenge for men around being vulnerably expressive with one another. Being independent and strong comes so much more easily to us than acknowledging what might be viewed as “softer” emotions; our culture supports strength in men and belittles deep internal vulnerability or insecurity. Rick outlines ways of transcending some of those difficulties and accessing strong communication and well-being as a couple.
