Mothers Who Inspire: Lori Davis

Join Rick Miller, executive director of Gay Sons and Mothers, for the fourth in the video series Mothers Who Inspire, as Lori Davis shares her experiences of being a Mormon mother in Utah and how she found the strength and courage to become a fierce advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and families.

Lori Davis was a practicing member of the Church of Latter-Day Saints when she reached out for help outside her faith to help her parent her son Zach, who is gay. In 2004 she joined the Children’s National Hospital parent-support listserv, and the experience “changed the trajectory of my family’s life.”

Lori—and other parents who recognized there were no safe spaces for gender-nonconforming kids—created the famous Camp I Am, which became a cover story in the New York Times Magazine on August 10th. As Zach was quoted, “I remember when I arrived that first year, I realized I wasn’t as weird as Utah told me I was.”

Lori has served on the board of Mama Dragons, a support group for mothers of LGBTQ children. She is currently on the board of PFLAG in Salt Lake City and is a supporter of Gay Sons and Mothers.
