Rick Miller, LICSW

About Rick

Rick Miller, LICSW, has dedicated his 40-year career to motivating people to change and inspiring them to find optimism inside themselves. Through his work as a psychotherapist, public speaker, podcaster, workshop presenter, interviewer, and author, he helps individuals, couples, groups, and others connect—and thrive—together.

A gay man who has himself navigated social stigma, Rick’s journey of self-acceptance has influenced his work with others. He shows people how to embrace complexities as well as vulnerabilities—and how to grow from these experiences. Rick is a sought-after speaker for events, workshops, and conferences.

It's all about relationships

With decades of expertise in the LGBTQ+ community, Rick historically prioritized underrepresented topics such as coming out, sexuality, and shame, and continues to empower LGBTQ+ people and their families.

Couples appreciate Rick’s warm and interactive style. A keynote speaker at couples conferences and faculty for Esther Perel, Stan Tatkin, and Terry Real, he also co-hosts the Modern Couples podcast.

Presenter

Rick is a sought-after presenter for keynote speeches, conferences, and workplace gatherings where he’s known for his inspirational casual style. Audiences are comforted by understanding their issues and reactions are not unique, and leave feeling energized and motivated to create personal and professional change.

Consultant

Success involves forming and maintaining interpersonal relationships. Rick consults with companies, organizations, family-owned businesses, and nonprofit social service and mental-health agencies, providing clinical supervision, assessment of workplace culture, increased communication for management, and workplace conflict resolution.

Hypnosis

Through Rick’s intuitive and creative hypnosis process, clients feel that they’re seen, heard, and understood. In traditional hypnosis, clinicians employ scripts; Rick uses imagination and awareness to create a customized empowering experience for each client, which he also teaches internationally at hypnosis conferences.

TEDx Speaker

Rick’s TEDx Talk, The Mother Factor, grew out of his research into the relationship between gay men and their mothers, but broadened the concept to be meaningful to anyone—mother or adult child—seeking to repair and/or deepen this critical and universal bond and to appreciate its centrality in everyone’s life.

Gay Sons & Mothers

One of the most significant themes in Rick’s work is the exploration of the bond between gay sons and their mothers. Over the course of his own life as a gay son and of his clinical work he has discovered that mothers can transcend cultural and religious barriers to love and accept their sons for who they are.

This is particularly true in the context of families with conservative political and/or religious backgrounds.

Retreat Facilitator

Rick delivers when a group needs inspiration and actionable creative ideas; whether it’s a one-day timeout via video conferencing or three days in a pastoral retreat venue, participants leave his retreats feeling energized and motivated.
